Shelly C. Bernstein, MD, PhD

President

Dr. Bernstein received his A.B. and Ph.D. in genetics from The University of Chicago and his M.D. from The University of Chicago Pritzker School of Medicine prior to completing his pediatric residency at The Children's Hospital in Boston. He then completed a hematology-oncology fellowship at Children's Hospital and the Dana Farber Cancer Institute in Boston. He had a significant research career prior to joining Weston Pediatric Physicians in 1990, and is the recipient of a MacArthur Foundation Fellowship Prize. Dr. Bernstein is an Assistant Clinical Professor of Pediatrics at Harvard Medical School and has ongoing teaching responsibilities of medical students and residents. He is board certified in pediatrics, a member of the Massachusetts Medical Society as well as a Fellow of the American Academy of Pediatrics. Dr. Bernstein has a special interest in hematology and oncology and, in addition to his patients at Weston Pediatrics, he also cares for children at The Jimmy Fund Clinic at the Dana-Farber Cancer Institute. He also holds hospital appointments at the Massachusetts General Hospital for Children, Boston Children’s Hospital, Newton Wellesley Hospital, and Brigham and Women’s Hospital.

Dr. Bernstein has established himself as a leader in pediatric medical management. He was a founding member of Affiliated Pediatric Practices (APP) and has been instrumental in leading and supporting the growth of the organization from five original practices to 18 practices in eastern Massachusetts, representing more than 60 physicians in community pediatric practice offices. He previously served as Vice President and Medical Director of APP and was responsible for developing and overseeing medical management and utilization management activities for the organization. Dr. Bernstein has served on numerous Partners Community HealthCare Inc. (PCHI) Committees (now Partners Community Physicians Organization – PCPO), including PCHI Medical Management, as well as having co-chaired the Pediatric Medical Management and Pediatric P & T Committees. He previously served on the PCHI Board of Trustees.

Dr. Bernstein was awarded the 2004 Partners Community HealthCare, Inc. (PCHI) Samuel O. Thier, M.D. Physician Leadership Award recognizing a PCHI physician whose qualities inspire others and who leads by example. In addition, APP received the Nesson Award for Excellence in 2003 for the development of an Asthma Disease Management Program, in 2005 for APP’s Patient Experience Program, in 2007 for an Obesity Management Program, and in 2010 for Driving Performance by Website Design. He was a founding member and President of the Tufts Affiliated Health Plan IPA at Children’s Hospital, and served on the Central Physicians Committee and Overseers Committee for Tufts Associated Health Maintenance Organization, Inc. He also served on the Physicians Liaison and Pediatric Advisory Committees for Blue Cross of Massachusetts.
